Kazinda used Catholic Church Brothers to register ‘wealth’- IGG

That Geoffrey Kazinda is a troubled man is not news. The new development in the embattled life of the former principal accountant in the Office of the Prime Minister is that he is now indicted and will soon answer for illicit enrichment at the High Court.

According to the indictment report submitted by the IGG prosecutors, Kazinda registered at least four properties under the Catholic Church congregation, the Brothers of Christian Instruction, whom he used as proxies to stash away property.

In the summary of the case seen by Daily Monitor dated August 3, Ms Sarah Birungi, the director legal affairs in the IGG’s office, states that Mr Kazinda used a company registered in the names of Trustees of Uganda Brothers of Christian Instruction to acquire real estates and the men in robes have now been lined up as witnesses in the case. The date of hearing is yet to be fixed.

The summary of evidence states that between 2009 and 2012, Kazinda, who was in June 2013 convicted for abuse of office, “acquired four motor vehicles worth Shs769.4 million using the name Charles Kamuni.”

In 2009, using the names of the Registered Trustees of Uganda Brothers of Christian Instruction, he again “acquired land located at plot number 1904 Bukoto, Kyadondo, Mengo at a cost of Shs120 million.

Using the same company, Kazinda acquired property on plot number 264, Bukoto at Shs350 million and the estimated cost of developing the said plots was Shs3.1 billion.

Names and identities of members of the Church who will testify against Kazinda in the alleged offence are not listed. Between 2010 and June 2012, Kazinda rented suite 105 at Golden Leaves now Constellation Suites Nakasero, an apartment of Sheraton Hotel, at Shs210 million and paid Shs149 million using the name Charles Kamuni and left a balance of Sh61 million.

Mr Kazinda was in 2013 sentenced to five years in prison for abuse of office, two years for forgery and another two for unlawful possession of government stores with the sentences running concurrently.
